Activist Investor

Investor that uses sizable equity stakes to actively influence a company's strategy and governance.

Activist investors build significant stakes in listed companies in order to actively influence strategy, capital allocation, management or the board. Typical demands include spin-offs, share buybacks, special dividends, management changes or M&A transactions.

Well-known activists include Carl Icahn (Icahn Enterprises), Bill Ackman (Pershing Square), Nelson Peltz (Trian Partners), Daniel Loeb (Third Point) and Paul Singer (Elliott Management). Once an activist crosses 5% ownership, they must file a Schedule 13D within ten days disclosing their intentions — making activism immediately market-relevant.
